THE UNZIP DEVOVEE PICTURE PAGE

A pictorial tutorial to guide you through the
process of unzipping Zip files. This guide describes
how to unzip the Devotee desktop theme file
which is available from the download page.
The described process, however, is applicable to
any Zip file that you may wish to unzip.

If you came here to unzip a different file or files,
just substitute the file names in the diagrams
with the file names of your Zip files. The same
applies to different Zip utilities.

The Correct Tool For The Job

To unzip files, or create Zip files, you will need
a program. There are hundreds of such programs
on the internet, and all have their best points
and drawbacks.

For most of you, I will recommend that you get
a program called WinZip. This utility is very up-
to-date, and is about the easiest Zip program I
could recommend. There are many others just
as good, so don't download it if you already
have a Zip utility. What you have already
should be just as capable of doing the job.

If you regularly buy magazine CDs and the like
you may already have WinZip or an equal
utility. Save yourself the download time and
check your CDs out! WinZip is a large file.

The only difference will be in the windows or
dialog boxes you get along the way. Since I
recommend WinZip, the pictures used in this
pictorial tutorial show how to unzip files with
WinZip. However, the steps performed are
all the same, regardless of which program you
use. Most of the Windows applications out
there provide similar dialog boxes to WinZip.

If any steps are out of the order shown and
described below, they will be noted. This will
only be the case for those NOT using WinZip
or programs that have the same steps as WinZip.

Included in the pictures are instructions.
I put these instructions within the pictures
so that you can save them and use them
to help you if you forget the steps.

To save a picture, right click on the
image itself, and select "SAVE PICTURE"
or "SAVE IMAGE AS". Put it in a folder
where you keep pictures, or documents
that you save from the Internet.

Now, let's get unzipping!

Step 1: Launch and Open a ZIP file

Using WinZip, there are many ways to select a
file for unzipping. I will recommend the sure
method, for some of you may already have
WinZip installed by someone else, yet WinZip
isn't set as the "default" Zip file handler. In such
cases, the method described here when using
WinZip will always get you started right.

Launch WinZip from the desktop if a WinZip icon
is present on it. If not, you will have to launch
it from the Start Button by locating WinZip in the
Programs tab, and clicking on it, or by browsing
your hard drive via "My Computer".
You will find it in a folder named "WinZip"
which is found in drive C, "Program Files" folder.
Click on "winzip.exe" or "winzip32.exe". It will
likely be the biggest file in the folder.

For other programs, launch the program using
the same steps as outlined above.

You should now get the main program
window pictured below.

Some other programs don't have buttons like
the ones in WinZip. Just use the "File" tab instead
and select "Open" or "Open Archive"
(A Zip file is an archive file).

Once you have made your selection, you will
get an Open dialog as shown below. Again, some
programs will have different means of selecting
a file to work on. You want to use the dialog to
find the Zip file you want to unzip.

Double clicking on the folders, and/or the
Go-Back folder, you can browse through any
folders on your computer. Once you have found
the file, and its name is in the "File name:"
window, you click the open button.

As soon as you do, the file will open, and
present you with all the files in the Zip file.
In the picture below is the contents of the
Zip file "devotee.zip" as it appears in the WinZip
window. Once here, you begin the next
step in the process.

Step 2: Selecting files for unzipping

Wow! What's all this?

Currently, the Zip files contents are open.
None of the files are selected, so we must choose
which ones we want to work on.

In most cases, you want to extract ALL the files
in a Zip file and create them as they were on
the computer that made the Zip file. This gives
you an exact copy of all the files, and enables
your computer to access and use the files just
as if you had made them yourself.

Now, click on the Action tab, and click on
"Select All". This will highlight all the files,
instructing WinZip to unzip all files when
we tell it to do so.

For other applications, there is no "Actions"
tab. No matter, find a similar action in a
different tab. In many an "Edit" or "Select"
tab is present, and gives you the same
"Select All" or "All files" option.

Once all files are selected, you click on EXTRACT.

I should warn those using programs other than WinZip
that you MAY have to do the step below PRIOR to
instructing the program to EXTRACT.

Step 3: Extracting the files

After files are selected, and the Extract button
has been pressed, we not inform WinZip where
we want place the files.

In the diagram above, we use the folders
displayed in the biggest window to locate the
folder in which we want to store the files. Using
the New Folder button, you can create one, and
for the "devotee.zip" file, a folder was named
"Devotee". As pictured above, it is also high-
lighted, making it the active folder.

Clicking on the Extract button now would
instruct WinZip to put all those files we
selected in the previous picture into the
active folder, "Devotee".

For those working with different Zip files,
you merely have to click the folders to the
folder you desire, and make a new folder
if you have to.

For those not using WinZip, you may have to
make a folder BEFORE you start since some do
not provide you with that ability within the
program.

That, my friends, is all! Once extracted,
the files are ready to use. About the only
trouble you may get with a file is if it has
been "corrupted".

Corrupted files will NOT unzip no matter
what you do. WinZip and other applications
will bark at you when they encounter a
corrupted Zip file. Something to the effect
that "this file is corrupted", or "Cannot unzip
file - bad data/file/whatever".

If you encounter such an error, you will be
forced to obtain the file again from its
source. If you got it from the Internet, you
will have to download it again. If a friend
gave you a diskette with the Zip file on it,
you will have to get another disk from your
friend. In the case of diskettes, it is very
common for files to become corrupted.

But be assured that once extracted, the
files will work and act just as they did on
the Zip file creator's computer. Well, ok.
If that person didn't put all the files needed
in the Zip, then maybe it wont. But you
likely wont encounter this often.

Now, get to it! Unzip your files!
You are ready to go.

The end.
